At the gaming industry's most important award show, Baldur's Gate 3 has been selected as the Game of the Year.
Speaking in Los Angeles while receiving the award, developer Larian expressed his joy in crafting the grandiose, Dungeons and Dragons-based fantasy role-playing game, characterizing the endeavour as a true passion project.
Timothée Chalamet, who had a role in Wonka, gave the highest honor to the Belgian studio.
It outdid competitors such as Super Mario Wonder, Spider-Man 2, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Alan Wake 2 and earned the top prize.
Altogether, six awards were won by Baldur's Gate 3, among them, best performance for actor Neil Newbon as the fan favourite Astarion.
Alan Wake 2 won three awards for game direction, narrative, and art direction, all of which contributed to its success as a survival horror game.
Alongside some noteworthy victories, The Last of Us series was given the award for Best Adaptation, Cyberpunk 2077 was recognized as the Best Ongoing Game, and Cocoon, a Puzzle Adventure, won the award for Best Independent Game.
Elsewhere, the innovation in accessibility prize was won by Forza Motorsport, while Tchia, an action-adventure, took home the Game for Impact accolade.
The Game Awards is an event that combines awards presentations and previews, with many viewers tuning in to see new trailers and details about upcoming titles.

The awards come in the wake of a year marked by thousands of layoffs in the gaming industry, despite a greater than usual amount of extremely well-received titles.
Game publishers such as Epic Games (Fortnite), Ubisoft Montreal (Assassin's Creed) and Niantic (Pokemon Go) have all declared layoffs.
The awards, organised by gaming journalist Geoff Keighley, often receive criticism for dedicating more time to trailers and adverts than giving out accolades over the course of the three-hour show.
There have been grievances this year that the program rushed through multiple awards without offering the recipients the opportunity to come up to the stage.
Kotaku's gaming site opined that, in a year where multiple developers were often facing layoffs each week, it would have been a blessing to allow these talented individuals to demonstrate their abilities.
Altogether, 31 awards are presented in several different areas such as audio design, best indie game, and access & innovation.
The ultimate decision is made by a combination of a jury of industry professionals and a fan vote, which contributes 10% to the final tally.
