AI chatbot on LinkedIn to Assist in Job Search

LinkedIn claimed it had accumulated more than 1 billion users and presented an AI chatbot designed as a "job searcher mentor" and other artificially intelligent tools to Premium subscribers. For some time, LinkedIn has been introducing AI technology as the company concentrates on automatic recruiter notifications and job postings. Two weeks ago, LinkedIn declared nearly 700 job cuts, with the majority of them being from the engineering division.. On Wednesday, LinkedIn unveiled an artificial intelligence-powered chatbot to act as a "job seeker coach" and other AI-driven tools for Premium members. The release coincided with the announcement that LinkedIn's platform has reached over 1 billion members. LinkedIn has been enhancing its features with the implementation of automated recruiter messages, job descriptions, and profile writing suggestions that leverage AI. The AI chatbot, which can help users weigh the merits of a job prospect, uses OpenAI's GPT-4. Microsoft is a major investor in OpenAI, and LinkedIn had to dedicate a lot of resources to reduce latency on its platform, according to Erran Berger, LinkedIn VP of Product Engineering. He explained that "when you’re having these conversational experiences, sometimes it’s almost like search — you expect it to be instant. And so there’s real platform capabilities we had to develop to make that possible.” The chatbot is triggered when users select questions like “Am I a good fit for this job?” or “How can I best position myself for this job?” It will analyze the user’s profile and experience to give relevant responses, and help identify any missing skills that may hinder chances of being hired. Gyanda Sachdeva, LinkedIn VP of Product Management, remarked that "the quality of responses has to be really good for the stakes being as high as they are here, so we don’t take that lightly at all." The chatbot also assists users by providing a few employee profiles of second- or third-degree connections to message about the prospect, and can generate a message tailored to the opportunity. The new AI tools come at a time when LinkedIn is revamping its operations to increase revenue, and announced layoffs two weeks ago. To prevent potential bias, the engineering team has taken steps to make sure the AI stays within responsible boundaries. Berger noted that the AI-driven job matching and personalized experiences help to "[ensure] equity-mindedness for job seekers."
