Amazon is introducing Astro for Business, a service that utilizes its Astro robot to serve as a roving security guard in stores to identify break-ins and other security concerns. Launching only in the U.S., the service comes with a hefty price tag of $2,349.99. Unveiled in September 2021, Astro for household use has been limited to those with invitations and has been hard to come by.
Amazon has released a new version of its Astro robot, Astro for Business, which is being promoted as a security measure for retailers and others who manage spaces up to 5,000 square feet. The robot will cost $2,349.99 and is only available in the U.S. for now.Originally introduced in 2021, the home robot version of Astro helps customers with their Alexa voice commands and has a 42-inch periscope camera that can detect whether a stove has been left on. However, this model is only available in limited quantities and on an invite-only basis for $1,599.Following testing in various businesses, Amazon announced that Astro can help detect blind spots and provide peace of mind. This is likely due to data provided by the National Retail Federation, which shows that shrinkage due to shoplifting and organized retail crime costs nearly $100 billion each year.In addition to Astro for Business, Amazon is offering a suite of security products, such as Ring Protect Pro, for an additional fee. It can be linked to Ring sensors and motion detectors. Furthermore, they offer a virtual security guard service so Astro can inform remote security centers of potential danger and allow them to view live footage before calling police or emergency responders.
