Apple held an atypical evening-time launch event Monday evening to reveal its new PC chips, MacBook Pro laptops, and a new iMac model.
Apple unveiled its updated Mac lineup at an evening event on Monday, ahead of the upcoming holiday shopping season. The computers, featuring refreshed chips, will go on sale next week and have the same designs as the existing models. The new processors are a big improvement, with faster speeds, lengthy battery life, and the power to develop AI applications. In addition, the 15-inch MacBook Air and the 14-inch MacBook Pro have both been released with the latter offering the M3 chip for its entry-level model at a reduced price. Apple began its transition away from Intel chips in 2020.
Apple revealed three new processors, including an entry-level M3, a 40% quicker M3 Pro, and a 250% swifter M3 Max designed for AI engineers and 3D artists. According to Apple, laptops with the M3 can last up to 22 hours on one charge. The 8 core CPU and 10 core GPU found in the M3 are outdone by the 12 core CPU and 18 core GPU of the M3 Pro, and the M3 Max has a 16 core CPU and up to 40 GPU cores tailored to AI projects. Apple also mentioned the M3 GPUs are 1.8 times swifter and the CPU performance cores are 15% faster than those found in the M2 series. Compared to its M1 processor, Apple reported the M3 is 60% faster. For this range of processors, Apple built them on the 3 nanometer process, which is currently the most advanced from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company. However, devices with the M3 Max won't be available until November.
Apple's newest 14-inch MacBook Pro starts at $1599, which is a lower price than last year's model that came with a more powerful "Pro" level processor. However, for those looking for faster chips, the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M3 Pro starts at $1999 and can be further upgraded to an M3 Max. The largest and most powerful laptop in Apple's lineup is the upgraded 16-inch MacBook Pro, which comes with an M3 Pro starting at $2499 and can be upgraded to an M3 Max for an additional cost. The laptop also includes an HDMI port, an SD card slot, and USB-C ports. Notably, the 13-inch MacBook Pro with the touchscreen Touch Bar keyboard did not get an update with new chips. Another unique feature of the higher-end MacBook Pros is the "Space Black" dark aluminum color that has been anodized in a way to reduce fingerprint smudges. Finally, the updated 24-inch iMac desktop computer starts at $1299 and now uses an M3 chip.
