Apple declared on Saturday that it will be pushing out a software patch that responds to grievances from customers concerning the newest iPhone 15 models, which were put on the market slightly over a week ago, generating more heat than expected. The company announced that the extra warmth from the newest phones is being caused by a mix of bugs in iOS 17, app malfunctions, and a short-term setup period that calls for more processing and thus heat production.
Apple announced on Saturday that it will be issuing a software update that will address customer grievances regarding the newly-released iPhone 15 models running too hot. According to an Apple spokesperson, the devices were becoming overheated due to a combination of iOS 17 bugs, application bugs, & a temporary setup period. The spokesperson further elaborated that Apple had identified certain conditions that could cause iPhones to heat up more than usual, and that they had discovered a bug in the iOS 17 operating system which will be fixed in the software update. Moreover, some updates to third-party apps were also found to be overloading the device's system, and Apple is working with the app developers to roll out fixes.
Since the introduction of the iPhone 15 models, various users have taken to Apple’s forum, Reddit, & social media to complain about all four models becoming too hot during use. Additionally, CNBC’s review of the new iPhone Pros reported that the Pro Max model was especially hot. One user stated, "I just got the iPhone 15 Pro today and it's so hot i can't even hold it for very long!".
Apple reassured its customers that the titanium chassis design of the $999 iPhone 15 Pro & $1,199 iPhone 15 Pro Max were not the cause of the over-heating problem, but instead, could be fixed with the software update. Apple also informed users that the update would not affect the phone's performance in any way. On its website, Apple specified that iPhones may become warmer during setup from a backup, wirelessly charging, or when using graphics-heavy apps or games. Still, if the phone does not display a temperature warning, it is safe to use.
So far, it appears that the new iPhones are selling well, with delivery times for the devices extending for weeks and lines forming outside of Apple Stores on the launch day. JPMorgan analysts noted in their report last week that the 15 Pro Max, 15 Plus and 15 are exhibiting higher lead times in comparison to their predecessors (e.g. iPhone 14 Series), with the 15 Pro Max setting a record for the longest lead time in the history of tracking lead time data. However, Ming-Chi Kuo, a renowned Apple supply chain analyst, reported in his blog post last week that the iPhone 15's heat issue may negatively affect sales. Despite these issues, Apple had managed to stay successful in the past with their launches. The iPhone 4 (released in 2010) had a design flaw that could cause calls to be dropped; Apple addressed this issue by offering free cases. Two years later, after the launch of the iPhone 5, the CEO at the time Tim Cook issued an apology for Apple Maps being unreliable and buggy. Furthermore, the iPhone 6 released in 2014 was scorned for being too easily bendable.
