In June, Apple revealed iOS 17, the most recent version of the iPhone operating system. It is now available for public beta testing and is free of charge for iPhone owners. Please note that this is still a beta version, which functions as a preview of the final software, allowing Apple to locate and repair bugs before the official release. Thus, Apple recommends users who prefer stability to wait until fall when the software will be released to all those with compatible iPhones. For those who are into more daring experiences, the public beta of iOS offers a glimpse of what iPhones will look like in a few months, as long as they have an iPhone XS (launched in 2018) or a newer model. There is a new way to install the public beta; instead of enrolling on Apple's website and downloading a configuration profile, you can go to Settings > General > Software Update and choose to download a beta version of iOS from the menu. These are some of the key changes of iOS 17.
Reach out to people with contact posters. In the upcoming iOS 17, you can setup a personalized picture and font that will appear when you make a call to another iPhone user. This is something like customizing your own lock screen. Apple has modified autocorrect to function better with a new transformer-based language model resulting in increased accuracy and grammar. A complete revamp of iMessage is also seen, making its biggest change in years. The interface has changed, with the apps like camera and stickers now being inside a menu at the left hand side in comparison to the top of the keyboard. In addition, the Apple search has been improved, including stickers and auto transcribing for short audio messages.
iOS 17 has a Journal app added to its lineup, which is designed to inspire users to input daily musings. Utilizing on-device machine learning, the app will prompt users to expound upon their recollections, acquaintances, music, and photos. Unfortunately, this innovative function is only announced for the later version, so you won't encounter it in this pre-release.
When their iPhone is placed horizontally on a wireless charger, users will now be greeted with a new dock mode interface instead of the regular lock screen. This interface will include widgets such as calendars, clocks, alarms, and other real-time information, which will be especially convenient for people who want to use their devices as bedside clocks. Another innovative feature, called NameDrop, allows two users to exchange contact details simply by bringing their phones close together. The Health app in iOS 17 will also introduce features for tracking daily moods and emotions as well as assessments to diagnose conditions like depression and anxiety. Furthermore, Apple will be introducing offline maps so users can download and use maps even without an internet connection. This has been available via Google Maps for a while, but this is the first time Apple has enabled the feature, even allowing users to download an entire map of the region.
Users with AirPods Pro will be able to take advantage of new features provided through the latest iOS. The most notable one is Adaptive Audio, which utilizes machine learning and other software to determine what you are listening to and outside sounds, and reduces the volume so you are able to be more in tune with your environment. Furthermore, you no longer need to say “Hey” to activate Siri since Apple has shortened the wake-up command. Apple’s ML technology has advanced to the point that it is now able to recognize cats and dogs in pictures, and identify each pet, adding them to separate folders. The Reminders app also has a new capability, organizing unstructured grocery lists into categories like produce, frozen foods, and dairy. Last but not least, Screen Time’s Screen Distance will alert users when they are too close to their phone for long durations.
Adding a new incentive to leave voicemails, Apple has launched a Live Voicemail feature which allows an iPhone user to view a transcription of the leaving message in real time, giving them the opportunity to pick up the call. Additionally, voicemail support for FaceTime calls is now available, a feature that had previously been absent and only allowed the sending of a text message. Furthermore, when it comes to two-factor authentication, iOS17 has created the capability for codes from emails received in the Mail app to be automatically inserted into the appropriate box on websites and apps. Finally, Apple Music has upgraded its offering by introducing the ability to cross-fade between tracks and collaborate on playlists, a feature which had already been available on Spotify.
