It is anticipated that the days of green and blue message bubbles on iPhones may eventually come to a close.
At present, the only type of iMessage to be displayed in blue bubbles is that from iPhones.
Apple has declared that they will back a fresh messaging standard that should make it facile to send messages from one phone to another.
Messages from Android phones, however, will remain displayed as green bubbles, implying that those who are eager for the bubble separation to come to an end may have to wait a considerable amount of time.
The company declared that they would be providing support for Rich Communication Services (RCS) on iPhones and iOS devices from 2024.
The RCS protocol has been created to facilitate the exchange of messages between telephones of varied operating systems.
According to 9to5Mac, Apple has undergone a dramatic transformation with this move.
Apple intends to add compatibility with the messaging standard with a software update sometime in the following year.
An Apple representative informed the tech publication that RCS would provide users with an improved experience when messaging people who have different cell phones than them, in comparison to SMS or MMS.
The spokesperson stated that this will run in tandem with iMessage, still being the most reliable and secure messaging experience available to Apple users.
Google, the creator of the Android cell phone operating system, has been the main rival challenging Apple to enable RCS.
Its "get the message" initiative has highlighted that for some users facing green-coloured notifications on iPhones or iOS devices, SMS and MMS messages are not secured via end-to-end encryption.
The recent enactment of EU regulations on digital platforms may have motivated Apple to embrace RCS.
The Digital Markets Act (DMA) within the bloc necessitates providers of major digital services - referred to as core services - to include methods which would make it easy for their platform users to communicate with rival platforms - this includes transmitting messages between different systems.
In early November, the Financial Times reported that Google and other companies had sent letters to the European Commission, requesting that the Commission designate Apple's iMessage as an indispensable service that should be able to interact with rival applications like WhatsApp.
Apple has maintained that iMessage should not be subject to the aforementioned regulations; however, the European Commission declared in September that it was assessing whether the iMessage app should be regarded as a major service.
This year, Apple had to abandon its renowned lightning port on new iPhones in accordance with EU stipulations for a shared charging cable.
Apple has just announced news arriving days after the launch of Nothing's method of allowing the owners of its most up-to-date smartphone to transmit iMessages to iPhone users.
The company declared that Nothing Chats would be providing a connection between iPhone and Android devices, allowing individuals to exchange messages in blue bubbles.
In reaction to Apple endorsing RCS, the company made a post on X (previously known as Twitter), stating, "It appears they have heard us".
