Apple's iOS 17 for iPhone will debut in the fall. One of its key features is "StandBy," which transforms your iPhone into a bedside alarm clock or a lively desk accessory. You can use StandBy to show photos, follow the weather, track stocks, and more.
This fall, Apple is introducing its iOS 17 update for iPhones. I have been testing the beta version in recent weeks and amongst its many features, the one I like most is StandBy. This feature transforms your phone into a digital bedside clock that offers more than a regular alarm clock. StandBy requires the use of MagSafe, which works on iPhones 12 or more recent editions.
StandBy mode offers a range of options. You can choose to stay upright to easily check your upcoming calendar events, keep an eye on the day's weather or view notifications. Some people may prefer the classic look of a simple clock face on their bedside table.
It can also be used on your desk with great success. In StandBy mode, users can have a constantly rotating display of pictures from the image library, similar to smart home hub gadgets from Amazon or Google. When your phone is placed either on your bedside table or your desk, you can always ask, "Siri, how long will it take me to get to work?" or, "Siri, turn off the bedroom lights and play Miles Davis's music."
No need to be concerned that a bright display will interfere with your sleep. Your iPhone can adjust the brightness or turn the screen off when it gets dark. Apple took a page from the Apple Watch Ultra and added a night mode that alters the time, calendar, and text to a red hue, which is less harsh on the eyes.
You can also activate notifications that provide you with detailed information from the apps you use. As an example, UPS notifies me that my gardening gloves may be delivered around midday. StandBy mode works optimally with the iPhone 14 Pro, that has a durable, always-visible display. When you own a different model, the screen will switch off but can be quickly reactivated with a simple tap. If you're interested in using this feature when it is available for all later this year, a professional tip is to buy a MagSafe charger rack to prop your iPhone near the side of your bed while it charges. I use something similar to the $40 Anker stand, that also charges my AirPods simultaneously.
You don't have to wait until iOS 17 is rolled out to everyone to try it; if you're willing to accept some potential bugs, you can install it in the public beta. Once you have it downloaded, go into Settings on your iPhone, turn on StandBy, pick "Always On" under Display (available on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max) if you don't want your screen to turn off, opt for Night Mode if you want to view text in a red tint, then make your selection regarding whether or not to be notified. When you're ready to turn in for the night, just set your iPhone on a charging stand in landscape position and it will automatically remember to activate StandBy and display the last thing you were looking at - whether it be the clock, photo gallery or calendar.
