Chinese State Media Condemn Mark Zuckerberg for Reportedly Selling Quest Headsets

Chinese state media slammed Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, for appearing to 'shoot himself in the foot' via the move to market the Quest headsets within mainland China. This is contrary to his past outspokenness on Chinese industrial espionage in 2020 congressional testimony. A Chinese state-controlled media outlet harshly criticized Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Wednesday, accusing him of "shooting himself in the foot" regarding the Chinese markets. The Beijing Daily affiliated WeChat account published the critique after the Wall Street Journal reported Meta is in conversation to sell its Quest headset line in mainland China. The Mandarin translation alleged that Zuckerberg's past criticisms of Chinese companies, including ByteDance's TikTok, are blocking his company from making inroads in the Chinese market. This editorial put the spotlight on visits from Apple CEO Tim Cook and Tesla CEO Elon Musk for their positive engagement with Chinese entities as opposed to Meta's lack of success in the Chinese sector. Zuckerberg has publicly called TikTok a "very effective competitor" and privately expressed that TikTok is a significant threat to American businesses. Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark. wrote a letter to U.S. intelligence officials after a discussion with Zuckerberg about the latter's concerns, and senior officials at the Department of Justice and Department of Homeland Security have agreed, naming China a cyber adversary. Google's CEO Sundar Pichai and Apple's CEO Tim Cook implied Chinese industrial espionage during their February 2020 testimony, and in 2009, Google was a victim of Chinese cyberattacks.
