Developer of Street Fighter and Resident Evil Expresses Interest in Synergizing Gaming and Movies

"At Tokyo Game Show in Chiba, Japan, Haruhiro Tsujimoto, Capcom COO, noted the synergistic effects of game-to-movie adaptations, with sales for both parties increasing. This led to the establishment of Capcom Pictures in Hollywood, a film production company established in 2022 in order to accomplish more films. Tsujimoto further asserted that the company's strategy going forward is to further develop both game production and film production, all in order to further digital entertainment." Well-known video game developer Capcom, renowned for titles such as Resident Evil, Marvel vs. Capcom and Street Fighter, seeks not only to capture gamers' hearts but moviegoers' as well. At the Tokyo Game Show in Chiba, Japan, Capcom Chief Operating Officer Haruhiro Tsujimoto stated to CNBC that the company's strength is their ability to sell both new and old games. Tsujimoto remarked that annual releases of titles to existing franchises like Street Fighter and Resident Evil is a testament to their catalog's high quality. To add to this, they released a sequel to their action role-playing game Dragon's Dogma after a decade. Tsujimoto conveyed to CNBC's Will Kouloris that this is "one of our major strategies," and that it "leads to the continued sales of our brands that we have released in the past." Tsujimoto highlighted Capcom's close ties to the film industry, mentioning that "Street Fighter" received a live-action adaptation in 1994 and the company has had seven "Resident Evil" films since 1997. He noted that Capcom was one of the first companies to recognize the potential of pairing game and cinema, citing the mutual benefit that is seen when a game is adapted into a film. By 2022, Capcom will have established Capcom Pictures in Hollywood in order to expand their reach in the film industry. Their goal is to create more films and continue to build on digital entertainment with both game and film production. It is their hope that these two businesses can both complement and push each other to reach new heights. Generative artificial intelligence has been promoted as an imminent breakthrough in the tech sector, potentially allowing for the creation of text, images, and videos. However, it is unlikely to become a factor in the game development field in the near future. Tsujimoto noted that the integration of AI into game development is "complicated," since "a number of challenges must be solved before generative AI can be added to our operations." Hisashi Koinuma, president and COO of Koei Tecmo Games, shared a similar outlook on Wednesday. Tsujimoto told CNBC that there are still difficulties to be overcome when using generative AI in game development. He explained that Capcom is still examining how it can benefit game production and how much it can contribute to creating better games. However, the COO pointed out that generative AI can be used to enhance efficiencies in work and development. He noted that this won't be done by cutting back on developers but by making Capcom's development more productive with the help of generative AI and more effective employment of personnel.
