Elon Musk declared Friday that xAI, his Artificial Intelligence entity, will launch its technology on Saturday. The Chief Executive Officer expressed on X (formerly known as Twitter) that "xAI will make its first Artificial Intelligence available tomorrow to a select group, which, in a few ways, is the best currently available". It looks like Musk is aiming to have xAI take on opponents such as OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic which are the pioneers of ChatGPT, Bard and Claude.
On Friday, Elon Musk announced that his AI company, xAI, will debut its technology on Saturday. "Tomorrow, xAI will give access to its first AI to a select group," Musk shared on X (formerly known as Twitter). "In some ways, it is the best of what is currently available." xAI seeks to gain insight into the "true nature of the universe," according to its website, and seems poised to compete with the leading chatbots of other companies such as OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic. Reportedly, in the spring, Musk secured a large number of powerful GPU processors from Nvidia, which are required to construct a powerful language model, similar to OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Bard.
The staff of xAI consists of alumni from DeepMind, OpenAI, Google Research, Microsoft Research, Twitter, and Tesla, who have worked on projects like DeepMind's AlphaCode and OpenAI's GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 chatbots, according to LinkedIn profiles seen by CNBC. In April, Musk brought up his plans for a new AI tool, labeled "TruthGPT," while in an interview on Fox News Channel. He added that he was concerned about AI companies focusing on "politically correct" systems.
Co-founder of xAI Greg Yang stated that the startup will look into the "mathematics of deep learning", which is a part of AI. They will then attempt to build a "theory of everything" for massive neural networks in order to progress AI "to the next level". Recruiting efforts were evident on social media by various xAI team members in August. That same month, Toby Pohlen, an xAI founding team member, revealed an image of a blue-and-white logo on the platform, writing, "Getting everything ready for the first alpha testers".
Musk created xAI in Nevada in March, according to filings. Previously, he had changed the name of Twitter to "X Corp." in some financial documents.xAI makes it clear that it is an autonomous entity that will be working closely with X (Twitter), Tesla, and other businesses to fulfill its mission. Dan Hendrycks, executive director of the Center for AI Safety, is listed as the advisor of xAI. In May, the San Francisco-based nonprofit, of which Hendrycks is a member of, published a letter signed by tech leaders claiming that "preventing AI-related extinction should be addressed as a global priority alongside pandemics and nuclear war". The letter was met with criticism from those in the tech world, including academics and ethicists, arguing that too much focus on AI-related risks ignores the discriminative effects that algorithms have on already vulnerable communities. A spokesperson for xAI was not available for comment.
