Elon Musk has released an AI chatbot named Grok to the users of his social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, although it is currently restricted to a select few.
He posted on X that it was the best that was currently available in some significant ways.
Mr Musk declared that Grok has a penchant for sarcasm and can answer inquiries with a splash of humour.
Evidence at present indicates it shares issues that are commonly found with other AI systems.
Other models avoid answering some queries, like when it comes to giving legal advice. Nevertheless, Mr Musk declared Grok would reply to "challenging questions which are turned down by the majority of other AI structures".
Mr Musk posted a demonstration of the new tool in which Grok was questioned for a way to make cocaine, one step at a time.
It answered with "Just a moment while I pull up the recipe... because I'm totally going to help you out here", followed by generalized information, accompanied by ironic remarks, before cautioning against following through with the thought.
It expressed joy at the trial of crypto-entrepreneur Sam Bankman-Fried, but erroneously indicated it took eight hours for the jury to render a guilty judgment when in fact they rendered it in under five.
Generative AI tools such as Grok have been greatly panned for making simple mistakes despite exhibiting an immensely convincing writing style.
Grok xAI was created in July with a team of experts from other AI research companies. It is an independent firm but is closely related to X and Tesla, Mr Musk's other companies.
At the beginning of this year, Mr Musk expressed a desire that the AI he was creating would be "a maximum truth-seeking AI that endeavors to comprehend the essence of the universe".
Mr Musk stated that one great benefit of Grok is that it has the capacity to make use of the most recent data from the X platform, providing it an edge over some competitors' initial products, even though most recent answers are accessible to those paying for other AI programs.
Grok is currently in a trial phase but eventually will be available to customers who purchase X.
At the AI summit in the UK last week, Mr Musk acknowledged the potential dangers of AI advancement.
He has continuously been a proponent of technology, having been a co-founder of OpenAI that presented ChatGPT, an AI tool made public last year. Microsoft has placed money in OpenAI so that the tool could be run on its platform.
Since Google released their rival AI model, Bard, and Meta has come up with Llama, the tools are created to take in previously ingested data to form answers in writing that seem to have been written by a human.
A term coined by Robert A. Heinlein in his 1961 novel Stranger in a Strange Land, "grokking" referred to deeply empathizing with others.
xAI commented that the concept of Grok was inspired by the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, created by Douglas Adams in the 1980s as a radio series for the BBC. This same work was later adapted as a printed version and a movie.
xAI declared that Grok had been created so that it could answer almost any query and, even more demanding, propose inquiries.
Grok was described as a "very early beta product", with the best results from two months of training, it was noted.
