On Saturday, Elon Musk declared that Twitter users would be limited to a set number of posts each day resulting from the excessive amount of data extraction and manipulation on the platform. When people attempted to access or share content through Twitter’s application or website around 11 a.m. ET., they encountered an “Exceeded Limit” or “Can’t Retrieve Tweets” error. According to Downdetector, more than 7,300 people reported problems related to Twitter.
On Saturday, Elon Musk, executive chairman and CTO of Twitter, announced that Twitter users will temporarily be limited to reading a certain number of posts per day due to "extreme levels of data scraping" and "system manipulation" on the platform. Verified accounts will be able to read 8,000 posts per day, unverified accounts can read 800 posts per day, and new unverified accounts can read 400 posts per day. Later in the day, he tweeted that the limits would be increased to 10k, 1k, and 0.5k, but did not indicate when the restrictions will be lifted. Thousands of users reported problems when attempting to access Twitter on this day, which may be linked to this new policy. Additionally, access to content that was previously available to users without an account has been restricted since Friday. Musk previously stated that restricting access was necessary due to "extreme" levels of data scraping and it would be "unlocked shortly," but as of Saturday afternoon the content remains restricted. This is not the first time Twitter has suffered technical difficulties in recent months. February saw an inability to post on the site, and March saw difficulties clicking on links and loading images. Outages have coincided with reports of a data center closure and massive layoffs at Twitter, which Musk claims are necessary for the company's financial health. Musk is no longer CEO of Twitter; he is CEO of Tesla and SpaceX.
