On Wednesday, Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, as well as the owner of Twitter, declared the launching of a new AI firm, xAI, with the mission to "comprehend the genuine essence of the universe." As detailed on the company's webpage, Musk and his team will provide more information in a real-time Twitter Spaces chat taking place on Friday.
On Wednesday, Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, SpaceX and the owner of Twitter, announced the formation of a new AI company dubbed xAI. The company's objective is to comprehend "the true nature of the universe." Musk's team will provide further details in a live Twitter Spaces chat this Friday. This collective of AI experts consists of veterans of DeepMind, OpenAI, Google Research, Microsoft Research, Twitter and Tesla, who have already worked on projects such as DeepMind's AlphaCode and OpenAI's GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 chatbots. The startup is likely to compete with brands like OpenAI, Google and Anthropic, as well as their own chatbots like ChatGPT, Bard and Claude. Initially reported by The Financial Times in April, Musk had made plans to use Nvidia's GPU processors to build a powerful language model. During a taped interview on Fox News Channel that same month, he proposed a new AI tool known as "TruthGPT". The chairman was worried that existing AI firms were focusing too heavily on " politically correct" methods. Dan Hendrycks, executive director of the Center for AI Safety, a San Francisco-based charity which published a letter in May asserting that the prevention of extinction resulting from AI should be treated as a critical global problem of the same magnitude as pandemics and nuclear war, will act as one of xAI's advisors. Some ethicists and academics suggested that the letter was overstating the risks of AI to redirect attention away from current harms caused by AI to disadvantaged communities.Greg Yang, co-founder of xAI, informed that the firm will delve into the mathematics of deep learning, aiming to expand AI's potential with their "theory of everything" for huge neural networks. In March, Musk registered xAI in Nevada. A post on the company's website made it clear that xAI is distinct from X Corp (formerly known as Twitter), but will collaborate with X, Tesla and other organizations in order to accomplish their mission.
