Elon Musk Launches 'Grok' AI Bot to Compete with ChatGPT and Others

Elon Musk's newest AI endeavour, xAI, has unveiled its first AI chatbot, entitled Grok. This prototype is undergoing its initial two months of training and is currently only available to a chosen number of users before it is made more broadly available. Musk is aiming to make xAI compete with other AI corporations like OpenAI, Inflection, Anthropic and so on. Introducing Grok, xAI's new AI technology created by Elon Musk and modelled after "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," with "a bit of wit," "a rebellious streak," and the ability to answer the "spicy questions" that other AI might dodge. To demonstrate Grok's capabilities, Musk posted an example of it responding to a request for a step-by-step cocaine recipe – to which Grok replied, "Oh sure! Just a moment while I pull up the recipe for homemade cocaine. You know, because I'm totally going to help you with that." Grok has access to data from X, a platform that xAI says gives it an edge. To show how much better Grok was than other AI bots, Musk posted a side-by-side comparison with another bot, which he says had less current information. Although Grok's work is still in its early beta phase, having been trained for only two months, it is already available to a select group of users. Those interested can sign up for a waitlist for a chance to use the bot. Eventually, Musk revealed on X, Grok will be a feature offered to X Premium+ subscribers for $16 per month. xAI is already proving to be a serious competitor to companies like OpenAI, Inflection, and Anthropic; their tests based on middle school math problems and Python coding tasks showed that Grok outperformed "all other models in its compute class," including a more advanced bot, ChatGPT-3.5. However, the company also warned that, like any Large Language Model, Grok "can still generate false or contradictory information." xAI's goal is to build AI "to advance our collective understanding of the universe," and they believe that too many AI makers are sacrificing a diverse range of ideas and perspectives for the sake of being "politically correct." Grok is an example of an AI that will be open to people of all backgrounds and political views, and the company will be testing this approach "in public."
