Elon Musk mentioned that he might contemplate permitting Alex Jones back onto X. This was almost a year since he conveyed he wouldn't reverse the prohibition on the controversial theorist. Musk commented, "In general, since this platform desires to be the worldwide town square, perpetual bans should be exceedingly sporadic." Last year, when a user posted, "Bring back Alex Jones!!!", Musk responded with a "no."
On Thursday, Elon Musk said he would consider allowing Alex Jones back onto X, despite previously vowing not to reverse an existing ban on the controversial conspiracy theorist. "Will consider," Musk reportedly commented on X in response to a user who mentioned the idea of Jones returning to the platform. "Since this platform aspires to be the global town square, permanent bans should be extremely rare," the X founder added. He also suggested holding a poll on the matter. Jones is scheduled to be a guest on Tucker Carlson's show on X, and news of his impending appearance has sparked questions about whether he will be allowed back on the platform.Twitter, which is now owned by Musk, had previously barred Jones and other Infowars accounts in 2018 after they violated the company's abusive behavior policies. Nevertheless, Musk indicated last year that he had no intention to reinstate the Infowars host, citing his own personal experience. "My firstborn child died in my arms," Musk wrote in a post. "I felt his last heartbeat. I have no mercy for anyone who would use the deaths of children for gain, politics or fame." This was referring to the tragic 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Connecticut, which Jones publicly claimed to be a hoax, leading to threats and harassment of the shooting victims' families by followers of the Infowars host. Jones eventually filed for bankruptcy protection, and families of the shooting victims have since offered to settle for an amount of at least $85 million over the next decade.Musk's recent Twitter activity has been causing its own controversy, after he amplified and agreed with antisemitic posts. In a recent interview at the 2023 DealBook Summit in New York, Musk accused advertisers suspending campaigns on X of trying to "blackmail" him. No representative of X was immediately available to comment on the matter.WATCH: Elon Musk is 'neither' great nor terrible, 'he's human."
