Elon Musk to Partner Tesla and Twitter with xAI Startup

During a live audio session on Twitter, Elon Musk, owner and chairman, revealed that his new AI startup, xAI, will be using Twitter data to build "maximally curious" artificial intelligence systems and products. The Tesla CEO further stated that his business and other companies where he serves as a founder or CEO, like Tesla, The Boring Co. and SpaceX, have been working in close cooperation for several years. Additionally, he noted that his AI will partner with the automaker in both "silicon" and "AI software" endeavors. Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on Friday that his artificial intelligence startup xAI will work both on the "silicon front" and the "AI software front" with the automaker. On a Twitter Spaces live audio session, Musk also mentioned that xAI plans to use Twitter data for training its "maximally curious" artificial intelligence systems and products. However, he didn't specify if and how much Twitter will charge the startup or his other companies for its data. Walter Isaacson, the author of an Elon Musk biography coming out later this year, asked Musk about Optimus, a humanoid robot Tesla is developing to be used in manufacturing. Musk said that the robot is still in its "early stages" and his team needs to figure out how people will be able to turn it off easily. Musk claimed that "every AI organization on Earth" had used Twitter's data for training, "in all cases illegally," without offering evidence. To counteract this problem, Twitter recently implemented rate limits on the social media platform. The CEO stated that they had to take action since "multiple entities were scraping every tweet ever made, trying to do so in like, basically a span of days. So—this was bringing the system to its knees". He apologized for any inconvenience caused by the rate limiting. In light of the widespread use of Twitter data by AI software developers, Musk asserted thatTesla "will use the public tweets—obviously not anything private—for training as well, just like basically everyone else has". He noted that Twitter data appeals for "text training," and "image and video training," though he pointed out that AI systems need more than human-created data. He then expressed his hope that xAI would emulate Alphabet-owned DeepMind's Alpha Zero, a computer program that achieved mastery in three games through self-training. During an exchange with a Tesla fan, Musk discussed how xAI would potentially use Nvidia- or Tesla-made silicon for data processing. He remarked that Tesla is "building custom silicon" and stated that its in-vehicle hardware—enabling Autopilot and Full Self-Driving capabilities—was "three-to-five times more capable" than its previous version. Furthermore, Tesla is currently producing hardware 4 and will have "hardware 5" in a few years, which Musk said would be "four or five times more capable". Finally, Musk suggested that the eventual AI language model that xAI will presumably develop won't be "politically correct". He explained that "our AI can give answers that people may find controversial even though they are actually true". He believes that Tesla's driving data will assist xAI in understanding the physical world, not just the Internet.
