Esports Finalists React to Penalty Controversy in FIFA World Cup

The controversy surrounding the final of the Fifa esports World Cup has overshadowed the result, according to professional gaming teams. An altercation ensued when Mark Zakhary – also known as Mark11 – failed to beat Manuel "Bachoore" Bachoore in the penalty shootout. Mark's team Futwiz assert that he attempted to pause game play because his controller inputs were visible to a large audience on a display, showing the directions in which he was targeting. FIFAe's organisers declared that an inspection of the video showed "no advantage concerning competitiveness" was acquired throughout the game. Fifa 23 enables players to activate an input overlay, which shows a representation of the controller on the screen. Mark's button presses were displayed in the venue in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Futwiz's team state that he endeavoured to communicate to the referees on three occasions to request a restart of the shootout, but they sadly lost 4-5 to Team Gullit's Bachoore. Mark reveals to BBC Newsbeat that the distraction had a huge mental impact on him. He remarks that he was at a loss as to how to react, given the difficulty of the circumstances. "Millions of people could witness where I was aiming, and I honestly had no idea what I was doing then." Mark is of the opinion that his rival's group would not be inclined to be deceitful, however, he doesn't think the way the planners dealt with the scenario was satisfactory. Manuel, his opponent, stated that he was unaware there was a controller on-screen and only noticed some noises in the background. He states that if he wanted to, he could view something, but likely would be disqualified if he did. Manuel mentioned that Mark might not have been "in the zone" due to distractions, yet he is not to blame for this. Manuel declared to be "amazing" after claiming the remarkable $300,000 (£232,000) top prize. He declares it to be "the best day in his career". The heads of Futwiz and Team Gullit informed Newsbeat that the controversy has shifted attention to an inappropriate direction. Dan Bellis of Futwiz states that people are discussing the conclusion of the matter. He suggested that they should be rejoicing that one of the children had achieved the highest accolade globally. Renzo Oemrawsingh, coach of Team Gullit, acknowledges that the controversy regarding their victory is "disappointing" and has had the effect of dulling the luster of the win. He has dismissed the idea of a rematch being held after FIFAe conducted an investigation. Mark mentioned that the controller input was an option for players to take advantage of if they so choose. I hesitate to say it, but they should be mindful of it. FIFAe has informed players that their input overlay might be showcased if they opt to activate it. The semi-finals had seen a similar incident, and there were no further worries before the finale. Upon careful assessment of the video, we can also verify that no one player was given an unfair edge as the other side only viewed what was on their own display, the statement added. According to the competition regulations, games are only allowed to be paused if there are technical difficulties - which did not happen during the penalty shootout. The occasion has no connection to EA, the developer, whose contract with Fifa expired last year. Mark, as he got on a plane back to Australia, spoke to Newsbeat and expressed a wish that the organisers would take into account the feedback so that upcoming players wouldn't be discouraged. He declares that he will consistently strive to reclaim the title he deserves. Be sure to check out Newsbeat on Twitter and YouTube.
