More than 1,300 experts have declared in an open letter that AI is a beneficial force, not a danger to the human race.
BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT, arranged an event to counter "AI doom".
Rashik Parmar, CEO of BCS, affirmed that the British tech sector did not think that the "catastrophic prospect of wicked robotic dictators" was likely to occur.
In March, tech pioneers such as Elon Musk, who recently formed an AI enterprise, wrote a letter urging for a cessation in the development of formidable systems.
The letter in question conveyed the opinion that super-intelligent AI posed a potential threat to mankind's survival. This sentiment was shared by film director Christopher Nolan, who told BBC that the AI experts he talked to regarded the current climate as their "Oppenheimer moment". J.Robert Oppenheimer was instrumental in creating the first atomic bomb, and has been portrayed in Mr Nolan's latest movie.
Nevertheless, while the BCS views the circumstances in a more optimistic way, they still back up the necessity of guidelines when it comes to AI.
Richard Carter, the founder of an AI-powered startup cybersecurity business, is one of the signatories to the BCS letter. With regard to the dire warnings, Mr Carter considers them to be unrealistic: "I firmly believe that the suggestion that AI is an existential threat to humanity is too far-fetched. We have not reached a stage yet where that could be possible".
The signatories of the BCS letter are diverse in their backgrounds, including business, academics, governmental departments and research organisations, although none of them are as renowned as Elon Musk, or operate major AI organisations such as OpenAI.
The individuals contacted by the BBC emphasize the beneficial applications of AI. Hema Purohit, the head of digital health and social care at BCS, stated that the technology is allowing the creation of novel methods of detecting severe health conditions. She provided an example of medical systems that can recognize indications of illnesses such as cardiac disorder or diabetes during a patient's eye examination.
She asserted that AI could hasten the evaluation of novel medications.
Sarah Burnett, who wrote a book concerning AI and business, highlighted agricultural applications of the technology, including robots that employ AI for pollination of plants, others equipped with the ability to determine weeds and utilize lasers to eradicate them, instead of spreading weed killer throughout a field.
The letter asserts that the UK is well-positioned to spearhead the establishment of skilled and specialized requirements for AI-related positions, backed up by an authoritative code of ethics, international cooperation, and well-funded regulation.
In so doing, Britain can become renowned around the world for high-quality, ethical, and inclusive AI.
This autumn, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will be convening a global summit on the regulation of Artificial Intelligence.
The BCS may assert that existential threats are fictional, however, certain dilemmas are just starting to arise or are already established issues.
Experts have forecast that AI technology could lead to the automation of as much as 300 million jobs, and some corporations have gone so far as to announce they will suspend recruitment in certain positions due to AI.
However, Carter believes AI won't take the place of humans, but rather will actually enhance their productivity. With regards to the work he does, he does find ChatGPT helpful. Nevertheless, he does not place too much faith in it, suggesting it has the knowledge of a typical 12-year-old who is overly enthusiastic.
He claims businesses will always require people at work, to be able to take responsibility in the case of any misfortune: "If people are fully excluded from the process, then how can any potential disasters be taken responsibilty for?"
He, along with other people who signed it, thinks laws will need to be established in order to stop the improper application of AI.
Ms. Purohit expressed that an impetus behind the agreement was the necessity of having guidelines in order to avert the likelihood of creating plenty of things with no consideration to testing, governance, and the validation that is part and parcel of it.
