France has commanded that Apple discontinue the sale of the iPhone 12 due to its excessive electromagnetic radiation emission.
On Tuesday, the French regulatory body which monitors radio frequencies directed the tech giant to repair already existing phones.
The ANFR has urged Apple to fix the issue through a software update; if that is not possible, the company must carry out a full recall of all iPhone 12s sold in France.
The World Health Organization has previously attempted to ease any worries about the radiation emitted by cell phones.
The website states that there is no proof that being subjected to low intensity electromagnetic fields is dangerous for humans.
The iPhone 12 was initially made available in September 2020, and continues to be sold around the globe.
Apple informed the BBC that they were challenging the ANFR's assessment, and specified that they had presented the regulator with analyses from both themselves and other entities which illustrate that the item fulfills all the related regulations.
The iPhone 12 was acknowledged to meet the global criteria relating to radiation levels.
Jean-Noel Barrot, France's digital minister, informed Le Parisien of the decision as a result of radiation levels surpassing the permitted amount, Reuters relayed.
He declared that the ANFR uncovered that the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) of the iPhone 12 exceeds the legal limit.
He stated that Apple was anticipated to answer within a fortnight.
Should they neglect to abide by the regulation, I am ready to request the withdrawal of all iPhones 12 currently in circulation. The regulation applies to everyone, even the tech giants.
France intends to disseminate its findings to other regulatory bodies within the trading bloc, according to Barrot, potentially resulting in "a sequence of reactions".
The ANFR necessitates that the SAR of devices to be affirmed against two disparate usages of a phone.
At the start, a "limb" check is conducted when a phone comes into contact with part of a person's body, such as when they are holding it or it is tucked away in their pocket. For this situation, the SAR limit is set at four watts per kilogram.
The regulator reported that the SAR value of the device's member was 5.74 watts per kilogram, exceeding the permitted limit.
The SAR measure on the iPhone 12 is below the limit when the device is located farther away, e.g., inside a bag or a pocket.
It was in France on Tuesday that the news was revealed - coinciding with Apple presenting its new iPhone 15.
This phone, the first since 2012 to offer a different type of charging port, has been released by Apple. They have also stated that an adapter will be available to allow customers to utilize their existing cables.
In response to media stories claiming that government departments had instructed their personnel to put a halt to using iPhones, a denial was released by the Chinese foreign ministry.
No laws, regulations, or policies issued by China have blocked the use of Apple's products.
