Koinuma, President and Chief Operating Officer of Koei Tecmo Games, informed CNBC during the Tokyo Game Show that their company, located in Japan, has been making use of standard algorithmic AI for quite a long period. He then added that despite this, there are still obstacles when trying to incorporate the newest form of AI, generative AI, into the development of games. "We still have a way to go in terms of incorporating generative AI into our products, but we are currently experimenting with different ways to do so in the future," he concluded. At the Tokyo Game Show 2023, many game developers have expressed a need to figure out how to address the copyright issues associated with generative AI.
At Tokyo Game Show 2023, video games are being discussed while many game developers in Japan express that the new trends such as generative AI or virtual and augmented reality headsets for game development may not be fully ready yet. Hisashi Koinuma, president and chief operating officer of Koei Tecmo Games, told CNBC that while his company has been using normal algorithmic AI for a while, incorporating generative AI into their products is proving to be difficult. Koinuma said on Wednesday that “We are still in the process of researching and studying how and to what extent generative AI, including rights-related issues, will benefit game production, and how much it will contribute to making better games.” This issue with copyright is not uncommon; game developers from Tokyo Game Show 2023 are attempting to figure out how to tackle these copyright issues related to generative AI.
Back in September, Microsoft informed users of its AI service, Copilot, that it would assume legal responsibility in the event of any copyright infringement. This illustrates the almost boundless potential of the gaming industry. In August, Nvidia showcased the Nvidia Ace and Nemo SteerLM technologies, which offer gamers the chance to interact with non-player characters in a more natural way due to their AI-powered natural language capabilities. This development has the capability of completely transforming the industry.
Though Generative AI is just beginning, the recent surge in the development of Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) headsets, like Apple's Vision Pro announcement last quarter, Meta's continual progress on their Quest line, and Sony's launch of VR2, has opened up a new frontier. Unfortunately, many gamers feel that the games currently available do not live up to the potential of the headsets. Koinuma, an experienced developer, is hopeful yet wary after his first experience in the market.
He stated that their company was among the first to try creating VR games. However, it was premature, as there were numerous issues, including the hardware being too unreliable to provide accustomed gaming pleasure. Koinuma declared that it wouldn't be viable for them to win the market until these devices enabled long-term gaming. He concluded that they intend to seize the chance when the circumstances are more favorable.
