Google to Impose $30 User Fee for AI in Gmail and Work Apps for Large Companies

Duet AI for Google Workspace that enables the generation of text and images for documents, and taking of meeting notes, will cost enterprises a flat rate of $30 per person per month - the same price at which Microsoft will offer its Artificial Intelligence enhancement tools once they become available for purchase. Both entities are striving to integrate generative AI technology in many of their major products. Google has announced plans to begin charging large businesses $30 per month for each user of its advanced AI-based enhancements to Gmail and other productivity apps. This price is the same as Microsoft's 365 Copilot features, which may become available in the first half of next year. Preorders for the Duet AI for the Google Workspace have been taken since June at the same cost. In addition, the fees are in addition to existing subscriptions for the productivity suites. Google is allowing companies to join free trials before committing to the subscription. The upper limit of the fee has yet to be determined for smaller organizations and individual users. Aparna Pappu, Google Workspace's Vice President and General Manager, stated the fee was decided based on customer willingness to pay for the bundle of value the technology would add.Google and Microsoft have been in a race to integrate AI into more of their core products, following OpenAI's release of ChatGPT chatbot late in 2020. Duet AI can create text documents, images, and various other elements for Gmail, Google Docs, and Google Slides when users input a simple text prompt. It can also help create a plan for projects in Google Sheets and take notes in Google Meet for people who miss video calls.Early customers of Duet AI include lingerie brand Adore Me, while Microsoft has advertised many of the same capabilities with its 365 Copilot. A consumer version of Duet AI for Google Workspace will be released early in 2021.Currently, more than 3 billion people use Google Workspace, with 10 million paying customers since March, and over one million people trying the AI capabilities through the 'trusted tester' program since it was introduced this year.
