Hackers Insert Pro-Hamas Messages to Israeli Billboards During Escalating Cyber Conflict

The situation in Israel concerning cybersecurity is becoming increasingly precarious while the Israel-Hamas conflict continues, like the recent hijacking of smart billboards that displayed supportive material for Hamas, and a cyberattack on a college that revealed hundreds of thousands of personal records. According to Gil Messing at Check Point Software Technologies, the perpetrators were able to manipulate the billboards for a brief time for an anti-Israeli message. On Monday, an alleged hacker group based in Jordan accessed the system of Ono Academic College, a school close to Tel Aviv, publicly posting around 250,000 records of its staff, scholars and more on Telegram. Rising cyberthreats in Israel are becoming increasingly apparent with the Israel-Hamas war. For example, two billboards in or near Tel Aviv were hacked, temporarily broadcasting pro-Hamas content, and a college near Tel Aviv had its personal records breached, which were subsequently published on the dark web. According to Gil Messing, chief of staff at Check Point Software Technologies, based in Tel Aviv, the threats involve either defacement of websites or distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks for a brief period of time. Additionally, various hacking groups have been making threats against essential services such as water utilities. The most prominent instance of a cyberattack this week was Ono Academic College, which had to take its systems offline after a hacker group from Jordan leaked around 250,000 records. Messing stated that the goal for these hackers is to create fear and discomfort, rather than to inflict any significant damage.
