On Thursday, the House Judiciary Committee is going to decide whether or not to hold Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg in contempt of Congress for not meeting the expectations of a past subpoena. The possible criminal contempt case will be sent to the Justice Department where they will decide whether or not to continue the investigation which originally looked into the communication between tech companies and the Biden administration, along with content moderation decisions.
The House Judiciary Committee is set to hold a vote on Thursday to consider citing Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg for contempt of Congress for not providing sufficient documents related to an earlier subpoena in the panel's online censorship investigation. The committee has suggested that a criminal contempt case be referred to the Justice Department should the resolution pass the House floor. The committee's subpoena was part of an inquiry to determine the degree to which the Executive Branch has influenced and acted in collusion with web companies, like Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft and Meta, to censor speech. The contempt report states that Meta has "willfully refused" to comply with the request, producing only a small number of internal documents and communications between Meta and external entities. It also states that Meta has declined repeated attempts by the committee to negotiate and provide a larger compilation of documents. Meta spokesperson Andy Stone has, however, claimed that the company has taken steps to comply with the committee's requests and provided over 53,000 pages of documents and made multiple current and former employees available for discussion.
