Lina Khan, FTC Chair, Affirms Opposition to Mergers and Rejects Amazon Prime

Lina Khan, Chair of the Federal Trade Commission, voiced her approval of the enforcement record of the agency in court, claiming she was "satisfied" with the accomplishments of the FTC thus far. During her occupancy of the post for over two years, Khan has taken comprehensive measures including authorizing a much-awaited antitrust lawsuit against Amazon in September. She also stated she does not have a Prime membership, which costs $139 annually, Amazon's customer loyalty program.. At The New York Times DealBook Summit on Wednesday, Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan defended her track record when it comes to blocking mergers, claiming she is "quite pleased" with the progress made since she began her tenure in June 2021. Khan was quick to note that the agency has so far brought 11 cases against mergers, with five plans being abandoned following a lawsuit. Explaining that they "want to win" their cases, Khan mentioned the failed attempts to stop Facebook parent Meta from acquiring virtual reality company Within Unlimited, and the loss of the battle against Microsoft's $69 billion acquisition of gaming giant Activision Blizzard, which the agency is still appealing.Khan is currently at the center of a potential career-defining antitrust case, suing Amazon in September for its "monopoly power" and the artificial rise in prices, as well as its allegedly complicated Prime cancelation process, which Amazon has denied. When asked why she hasn't subscribed to Amazon Prime, Khan simply replied that she "just hasn't".
