Meta's Threads Reaches 100 Million Users While Twitter Sees Decreasing Numbers

Lanon Wee

Since the introduction of Meta's text-based platform Threads, which had already exceeded 100 million registrations in its initial week, user activity on Twitter has decreased. Officials of Meta are promoting Threads as being a more positive "public square" for those communities which were never truly comfortable with Twitter. On Sunday, Matthew Prince, CEO of Cloudflare, posted an image illustrating to Twitter the "plummeting" of activity on the service. User traffic on Twitter has weakened since the launching of Meta's text-based platform Threads, which has already accumulated 100 million sign-ups since its release a week ago.Threads was initially available in the U.S. Wednesday and is being promoted by Meta executives like the boss of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, as a brighter "public square" for communities "that never really welcomed Twitter." So far, users seem to be on board."Threads managed to secure 100 million subscribers over the weekend. That's mostly organic demand and we still haven't turned on many promotions yet. Hard to believe it's only been 5 days!" Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg posted Monday.Twitter appears to have suffered a setback. Matthew Prince, the CEO of Cloudflare, distributed a screenshot to Twitter Sunday showing that action on the platform was "declining sharply."As per Similarweb, a data enterprise that specializes in web analytics, web traffic to Twitter descended 5% for the first two full days Threads was generally obtainable compared to the previous week. The company reported Twitter's web traffic has dropped 11% in comparison to the same days in 2022.Twitter responded to CNBC's petition for comment with an automated response. Meta didn't present extra comment apart from Zuckerberg's post. The fantastic growth on Threads is helped by the fact that it is tied to an existing social network, Meta's Instagram. Individuals can sign up with their existing handles on Instagram and are capable of maintaining some of their following as other people sign up for the app.Threads attained the 100 million marker even faster than OpenAI's generative chatbot ChatGPT, which exceeded 100 million regular users in two months. The app still has a great deal of space to grow, not having yet launched in Europe, where Mosseri mentioned there is still some regulatory complexity to navigate. If Threads is able to maintain its userbase, it could reinforce its place as a genuine rival for Twitter, which announced close to 238 million monetizable daily active users in its most recent quarter report as a public enterprise last summer.Twitter boss Elon Musk appears to have already exhibited some anxiety about Threads, as his longtime lawyer Alex Spiro sent a letter to Meta accusing the company of "unlawful misappropriation" of trade secrets.Musk and Zuckerberg were also trading jibes over the weekend, as Zuckerberg teased Musk's tweet style and Musk termed Zuckerberg a derogatory name.
