On Tuesday, at its Inspire conference, Microsoft announced Meta's new language software to be available. A representative from Meta commented that the firm is not aiming to generate income from Llama 2. For Microsoft's enterprise hosting features, companies will have to pay. The agreement demonstrates that Microsoft is willing to give its support to an AI language from a source outside of OpenAI.
Microsoft has made a multimillion-dollar investment in OpenAI for its chatbot technologies employed alongside its important services like search. However, Microsoft has declared that its relationship with OpenAI is not exclusive as it highlighted its partnership with Meta to make their new AI language model, called Llama 2, accessible on Azure cloud. Meta's blog reported that Microsoft is their "preferred partner" for their Llama 2 software, which is currently free for companies and researchers. Microsoft affirmed their shared commitment with Meta to "democratize AI and its benefits" and welcomes the open approach of Meta with Llama 2. A spokesperson for Meta mentioned that they don't prioritize monetization for Llama 2, but with a commercial license it would require a payment to Microsoft for its enterprise hosting features. In February, Meta's CEO Mark Zuckerberg disclosed the availability of Llama for the general public to explore its AI applications such as responding to questions or summarizing documents. Although Meta will not earn money from the collaboration with Microsoft, it stands to gain more users and developers employing the software. Llama 2 is also available through Amazon Web Services and Hugging Face, a well-known service popularly used by AI researchers. This deal is a major breakthrough for Microsoft, as they are now embracing an AI language model not made by OpenAI. Microsoft stocks rose to 4.7% at $362.12 in the midday trading market.
