Many people voiced their discontentment with Google Maps' new hues during the Thanksgiving journey period. The streets are now a pale gray, the bodies of water are a bluish green, and parks are presented in a light greenish-blue hue. A one-time Google Maps designer relayed to CNBC that the new shades make it "less pleasant, less precise and remote from humanity."If you are interested in sparking a lively discussion at the office water cooler, bring up the new color scheme of Google Maps. The update, which has been out for a few weeks already, sparked a great deal of online commentary around Thanksgiving travel. Most viewers voiced negative opinions regarding the new color scheme, claiming the roads, now gray instead of yellow, and bodies of water, now teal instead of a deeper blue, seemed colder and less accurate. Elizabeth Laraki, a former Google Maps designer, took to X to express her belief that Google Maps could clean up its user interface. Additionally, she thought the new colors resembled Apple Maps far more than Google Maps. Reddit and X were full of similar comments, with most users feeling that the contrast was too low between colors. A spokesperson from Google stated that the research and feedback from users resulted in these changes in order to make the map easier to use and to better reflect real world roads. Despite the handful of people that were in favor of the new colors, the majority found them unappealing. Google recently released further updates including a new way to explore activities and the use of emojis on Google Maps, however none of these have met with the same criticism as the color scheme did.
