Immediately after, the situation took another turn when Nadella declared that Altman and Greg Brockman would be integrated internally into the Microsoft organization.
Sam Altman, former CEO of OpenAI, is set to move to Microsoft to head up an innovative AI research team, per an announcement by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella on X. The endeavor will include Greg Brockman, former OpenAI president and board chair, as well as other associates. Microsoft—which has already sunk billions into OpenAI and has a strong technological bond with the company—is enthusiastic to launch this new project.
Nadella signaled Microsoft's continued commitment to OpenAI on Sunday night, stating that they "look forward to moving quickly to provide [OpenAI] with the resources needed for their success." He also noted the company's product roadmap, innovation at Microsoft Ignite - and the ongoing support for customers and partners. In response, Altman shared Nadella's post and commented that "the mission continues." This was despite the news that Altman had been removed from OpenAI's board and replaced on an interim basis with technology chief Mira Murati. There had been plans to bring Altman back as CEO over the weekend, which were then superseded when former Twitch CEO Emmett Shear was appointed, and both Altman and Brockman took on roles in-house with Microsoft.
Nadella expressed enthusiasm to become acquainted with Shear and OpenAI's new leadership team on Sunday evening. Just last month, OpenAI had reportedly been in talks to offer employee shares to investors at a valuation of $86 billion. OpenAI earned fame in 2021 due to the release of its ChatGPT chatbot. This chatbot provides users with the ability to type in inquiries to get answers that can lead to further conversation.
