Staff of OpenAI React to News of CEO Joining Microsoft, Demand Board Resignations - Reports

Hundreds of OpenAI staff members have reportedly sent a letter to the board asking them to resign or else the employees will transfer to Sam Altman's new venture with Microsoft "imminently." Reports state that those who signed the letter include ex-interim CEO Mira Murati, Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap, and OpenAI co-founder and board member Ilya Sutskever. Five hundred and five OpenAI employees, including co-founder and board member Ilya Sutskever, have penned a letter calling for the resignations of the remaining board members. According to figures obtained by Wired, the letter states that those employees will subsequently join Sam Altman's new venture under Microsoft, as Microsoft has “assured” them they would retain their jobs. Mira Murati, OpenAI’s interim CEO, and COO Brad Lightcap are among those who signed the document; Murati was chosen to lead following Altman’s exit before being succeeded by Twitch co-founder Emmett Shear. Even Sutskever has stated his cooperation with the letter, posting on X, formerly Twitter, he “deeply” regrets his involvement with the “board’s actions”. A string of OpenAI personnel gave their blessing to the letter as well, saying “OpenAI is nothing without its people”. The backlash against Altman’s removal by OpenAI’s board, which included Sutskever, precipitated the attempt to bring him back, but these negotiations were unsuccessful. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced that Altman and OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman would come in tow with “colleagues” to join the company in a new, independent venture, although the exact number wasn’t revealed. Microsoft declined to comment on whether employees leaving OpenAI would be hired, and OpenAI did not make any remarks concerning the letter.
