Players of the game Fortnite who were billed for in-game items they didn't want may receive some of their money back due to the FTC's settlement with the game's developer, Epic Games. The FTC has begun notifying affected individuals of their eligibility for compensation. Eligible people can learn how to apply for a refund here.
Frustrated parents whose children purchased items on popular video game Fortnite without their permission may soon receive some recompense. This Tuesday, the Federal Trade Commission declared that more than 37 million people may be eligible for a refund through a settlement with the game maker, Epic Games. To apply for a refund, eligible individuals must visit the FTC's website and provide their claim number and Epic Account ID. One can qualify for a refund if from January 2017 to September 2022; they were charged in-game currency for unwanted items, their child charged game items to their credit card without them knowing, or their account was locked after they disputed wrongful charges with their credit card company. Refund applicants must submit their form by January 17, 2024 to be considered for a payment. The amount of the refund is still unknown, as it will depend on the number of people who file a claim.
To reach the settlement, Epic Games have agreed to pay a total of $520 million, with $245 million going to consumers, and the remaining $275 million as a penalty for breaching the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act. Epic also must not apply deceptive designs to charge people without their affirmative consent, nor block consumers from their accounts if they dispute unauthorized charges. Epic commented that through their settlement, they wished to "be at the forefront of consumer protection and provide the best experience for our players."
