Several businesses, including Google and Amazon, grant users the ability to log in to accounts and websites through passkeys. Passkeys, which are strings of encrypted information that can be unlocked with a facial recognition scan, fingerprint, or PIN, are seen by many companies as a step forward for improved digital security for users.
A safer way of logging in to apps and websites that does not require the use of passwords is known as a passkey. Major corporations such as Microsoft, Amazon, Apple and Google have embraced this new technology. Unlike a password, a passkey is a string of encrypted data stored on your device and you must be verified via facial scan, a fingerprint scan or a PIN code to gain access. No password exchange takes place. The Fast IDentity Online (FIDO) Alliance developed the passkey standard, which Google referred to in an October blog post, saying "it works using public key cryptography and proof that you own the credential is only shown to your online account when you unlock your phone."
As digital privacy is becoming increasingly difficult to protect, especially with the need to remember multiple passwords, the switch to passkeys has grown in popularity. A survey carried out by Pew Research discovered that seven out of ten Americans are feeling stressed about the amount of passwords they are expected to remember. Additionally, companies are motivated to use passkeys since they are responsible if their customers’ data get stolen; this could lead to expensive repair costs and hefty fines. According to Jacob Hoffman-Andrews, a senior staff technologist at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, passkeys are a better option even with the use of password manager apps as they do not allow the copy/pasting of passwords which leaves them vulnerable to phishing scams.
To summarise, passkeys are more practical and secure than passwords when it comes to defending personal information. Passkeys can be registered and set up on your own device in a few stages. Ensure you are using your own device, for example I did mine from my iPhone, but it can be done with a computer or Android phone, by following similar processes.
Go to https://myaccount.google.com/ and sign in. In the “Security” section, click “Passkeys” under “You can add more sign-in options.” Type your password to verify your identity. This will take you to a page with an explanation of passkeys and the option to choose a face scan (you can also opt to use a fingerprint or PIN). If you decide to use a face scan, like I did with my phone, press “Continue” and look at the camera. After the scan is complete, you’ll see a notification that says your passkey has been created. The next time you log in to your account, you’ll be prompted to use your passkey. Simply press continue to scan your face, and then you will be successfully logged in.
To access Amazon's passkey feature, log in to the website as usual. Tap your name on the upper right-hand corner of the page. Then, select 'Your Account' from the drop-down menu and click 'See all account.' From there, choose 'Account Settings' and select 'Login & security.' Under that tab, you will see a bar labelled 'Passkey;' click 'Set up' on it. On the next page, select the yellow bar that reads 'Set up.' If you're using your phone it may prompt you to use face scan to create the passkey; click 'Continue' to finish the setup. From then on, whenever you sign in to Amazon it will prompt you to use the passkey.
To set up a passkey with your Apple ID, you'll need a device running iOS 17 or Sonoma. To check if you need to update, go to General > Settings > About. Then, visit https://appleid.apple.com and click "Sign in." Enter your email or phone number, and press the arrow on the right. A bar that says "Sign in with Passkey" will appear; click it. Choose the method you'd like to access the passkey—I chose Face ID—then press continue. The device will scan your face, and you'll be ready to use the passkey for future sign-ins. Your passkeys will be stored in iCloud Keychain with your passwords.
If you have misplaced a device with your access codes, you can still retrieve your account and, in many cases, delete the passcodes from the device you lost. Do this:Go through the steps to get back to the access code section of your account for the website you're wanting to remove it from.Within the passcodes, you'll find an option to delete them.Carry out the steps again to put in a fresh access code on your new device.Apart from that, a lot of other webpages and applications support passcodes for logins, such as Microsoft, Uber, Nvidia, Nintendo and TikTok. So search and enable that feature if you would like a more secure option instead of a password.
