Threads App Employs Retention-Driving Hooks as More Than Half of Users Exit

Meta Platforms executives are intensifying their efforts to bolster user retention on their new Twitter counterpart Threads, after the app shed over half of its users shortly after its originally popular launch, CEO Mark Zuckerberg disclosed to employees in a Thursday internal company town hall (which Reuters heard the audio of). While the app's retention rate was more than expected, it was "not ideal" he shared. "If we had more than 100 million join, it'd be great if even half of them stayed; we're not there yet," he said. To improve user sustainability, the company is looking into including more features, such as a desktop version and search option, to draw in more users. Additionally, Meta intends to create "retention-driving hooks" to introduce people back to the app, like providing connections between Instagram and Threads. A spokesperson for Meta declined to comment on the meeting. They followed their comments with news of the company's impressive fiscal quarter, even in the face of a decrease of advertising sales, lifting shares 8%. Looking to the future, Zuckerberg noted the progress on the augmented and virtual reality aspect of the metaverse. He stressed the need to get ahead of competitors such as Apple, Google and Microsoft, many of whom have experience in operating systems. He forecasts mass adoption of metaverse technologies in the 2030s. To get developers on board, the company released AI model Llama 2, which has been downloaded over 150,000 times in the week since its launch. Finally, in response to an inquiry on the proposed "cage match" against Elon Musk, Zuckerberg said it wasn't certain if that would go ahead.
