Tom Hanks Alerts of Artificial Intelligence-Generated Image in Dental Plan Ad

Tom Hanks cautioned against an ad purportedly featuring him, clarifying that it was actually an AI counterfeit. "I recently found out there's a video circulating that's promoting a dental plan featuring an AI version of me," the actor posted to Instagram. "He stated that he had no involvement," was his addition. Hanks has expressed his concern about the "artistic challenge" posed by AI to the film industry, and this point has been a major factor in recent labor actions taken by well-known Hollywood performers and writers. As AI systems continue to become more complex and capable, anxieties have been aroused regarding their capability of crafting virtual replicas of actual people that are increasingly lifelike - which are commonly referred to as deepfakes. Several celebrities, such as Martin Lewis the consumer financial expert, have had their images replicated in deepfakes, which are generally used for fraudulent purposes. The government in England and Wales has made it easier to prosecute offenders by tightening the law in response to the use of deepfakes in pornography, which is sometimes utilized to take revenge. Counterfeit AI generated images and videos of political figures are exacerbating the difficulties caused by information untruths on the web. Former US President Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky, the current leader of Ukraine, are some of those who have been the object of such falsehoods. In September, Google declared that any political ads that appeared on its platform must make it known whether they had been produced with AI. AI-assisted video manipulation may also have non-contentious uses - for instance, virtual concerts headlined by the band Abba which have become quite iconic. When he guested on the Adam Buxton podcast in May, Hanks spoke about the potential of AI being utilized to extend the performing careers of artists. He remarked that it was clear they were going to have the capacity to convert data stored inside computers into a face and character, and that this has increased hugely since then. He noted that this trend is now ubiquitous. Anybody can now use AI or deepfake technology to recreate themselves at any age. Were I to be hit by a bus tomorrow, my presence would end, yet performances created through this technology can continue indefinitely. Concerns concerning being displaced by AI have been a major factor in the current spate of strikes impacting Hollywood, resulting in halting production on shows including Stranger Things and The Last of Us. The Writers Guild of America (WGA), representing screenwriters, has come to a tentative agreement with studio executives that will terminate their industrial action. However, a conflict between actors, which is also partly driven by concerns that AI will lead to fewer acting roles, has yet to be resolved.
