TSMC plans to invest close to NT$90 billion (roughly $2.87 billion) in a state-of-the-art chip-packaging factory in Taiwan, taking advantage of the growing trend of artificial intelligence. The impetus for this stake is driven by "the accelerated development of the AI market," as Central News Agency states, and the "booming requirement for TSMC's high-end packaging solutions," as they put it.This investment is conceived to generate around 1,500 fresh job opportunities in the region, reports suggest.
TSMC, which is the production source of many of the world's most advanced processors, such as those found in the latest iPhones, iPads, and Macs, plans to invest around $2.87 billion New Taiwan dollars ($90 billion) in an advanced chip packaging plant in Taiwan, the company told CNBC on Tuesday. This comes as global chipmakers look to benefit from the growing popularity of artificial intelligence (AI). Last week, TSMC acknowledged the strong surge in demand for AI chips.
The investment is a result of the rapid development of AI and "strong demand" for TSMC's packaging, according to Taiwan's Central News Agency. The facility is planned to be situated in Tongluo Science Park in northern Taiwan, and should create around 1,500 jobs. C.C. Wei, TSMC's CEO, spoke of their "very tight capacity" on the advanced packaging side during their second quarter earnings report, and that they are aiming for the difficulties to be resolved by next year at the latest.
Packaging is a crucial part of semiconductor production, plus it involves the protection of chips and the building of connections for the item to be integrated into an electronic device. A report from the Central News Agency also detailed that TSMC's packaging production capacity has been strained due to Nvidia and AMD, two of their biggest customers, competing for it.
Nvidia has acquired high bandwidth memory chips that allow it to install its cutting-edge A100 graphics processing units, which are used to train OpenAI's popular AI-powered language model, ChatGPT. The chatbot has become famed online for its simulation of human-like replies to customer input. According to a recent report, the implementation of TSMC's advanced packaging expansion initiative is accompanied by industry expectations that companies like Wanrun, Hongsu and Xinyun, which produce chip-related equipment, will benefit from the proceedings. TSMC's shares saw a 1.97% increase in price on the Asian market Tuesday.
