Urs Holzle to Leave Executive Role at Google After Cloud Reorganization

Employee No. 8 Urs Holzle has informed CNBC that after 24 years of management, he will shift his focus to a few technical projects, in addition to providing counsel. As part of the alterations to the cloud sector, Chris Vonderhaar, who is in charge of AWS data centers, has been appointed the new head of supply chain. After 24 years of leading technical teams at Google, Urs Holzle will be stepping back from management and transitioning to become an "individual contributor". Holzle, who was reporting directly to CEO Thomas Kurian, oversaw an organization of 12,000 full-time employees. He mentioned in a formal email to employees that he looks forward to focusing on a few technical assignments, while also consulting on AI processes, facilitating discussions, and promoting quicker decision-making. As reported by CNBC, the move follows a restructuring of Google Cloud's organization—led by Kurian—that entails Chris Vonderhaar taking the lead role of Cloud Supply Chain and Operations, separately from Ben Treynor Sloss who will now report directly to Kurian. This restructuring follows the pressure Google is facing to continue growing its cloud revenue, which achieved its first profitable quarter in April. It has also necessitated quicker technical decisions from the company as it simultaneously faces competition from Amazon and Microsoft in cloud offerings and AI. As a result of the restructuring, Jeff Dean, who has long managed Google's AI efforts, was also reclassified as an "individual contributor" and given a new title as "chief scientist". The move is part of Google's call for limiting remote work as they aim to get employees to return to physical offices. Holzle's own decision to move to New Zealand sparked internal controversy earlier this year as it raised employee questions of a double-standard for higher-ups. In recent all-hands meetings, a few company executives have made appearances.
