Varjo Introduces Expensive Mixed-Reality Headset to Compete with Apple and Microsoft

On Monday, Finnish tech startup Varjo unveiled its latest headset, the XR-4, which is beginning at a cost of $3,990 - a significantly reduced rate compared to its forerunner, the XR-3, that starts at $6,495. The XR-4 is aiming to establish its place in a saturated market that already has headsets on offer from the likes of Microsoft and Apple. On Monday, Finnish mixed-reality startup Varjo launched the XR-4 headset. Priced at $3,990, it is similar to those from Meta, Microsoft and Apple, as major tech companies are betting big on virtual and augmented reality. The XR-4 is intended for enterprise use cases, such as simulation training for defense contractors or mapping large construction sites. It has two 4K displays with 50% wider field of view, brighter displays and a wider color palette than earlier devices. Two 20-megapixel cameras on the front enable pass-through mixed reality and ambient light sensors as well as improved lidar to ensure users can experience both virtual and augmented reality environments. It also supports built-in 3D spatial audio, noise-canceling mics and integrated speakers, as well as Varjo's own controllers for navigation.Since its founding, Varjo has raised a total of over $160 million from investors such as Foxconn, EQT, Volvo and Atomico. Despite not disclosing a valuation at the time of its $40 million round, the latest offering will face competition from Meta's Quest 3 and Apple's Vision Pro, the latter of which is set to launch next year.
