When Can You Access National Parks for Free in 2024?

Out of the four hundred US national parks, only one hundred and nine impose an entry charge which typically varies from $20 to $35 for each vehicle. The National Park Service is offering free access to these parks on six occasions in 2024. If you intend to drop by multiple parks, it is still sensible to buy a yearly pass that provides unrestricted access all-year-long. The National Park Service will provide free entry to U.S. national parks on six days in 2024. Though most of the 400+ parks in the country allow free admission all the time, the following 109 parks, including iconic locations such as Grand Canyon, Zion, Rocky Mountain, Acadia, Yosemite, Yellowstone, Joshua Tree and Glacier, normally charge an entrance fee, varying from $20 to $35 per vehicle. Motorcycles may need to pay per person and there may be other additional fees. On the following days in 2024, all parks with an entrance fee will offer free admission: January 15 (Birthday of Martin Luther King Jr.), April 20 (first day of National Park Week), June 19 (Juneteenth), August 4 (anniversary of the Great American Outdoors Act), September 28 (National Public Lands Day) and November 11 (Veterans Day). Mary Cropper, travel advisor and senior U.S. specialist at Audley Travel, suggested that, based on a visitor's travel plans, it could be beneficial to purchase the $80 annual pass before the trip to any of the 2024 free entrance days to the park. This pass grants unrestricted access to all national parks and other federal recreational places, with discounts or even free passes made available to some groups. For instance, if you are intending to tour many parks in a single journey, getting a pass may be the wise choice -- as you will then have to pay the regular admission charge for each park you visit (with the exception of free day). Cropper advises, “You should consider the cost.” In 2022, there were around 312 million visits to national parks. Although it wasn't a record year - the highest number of visits was in 2016, the centennial year of the National Park Service - visitation has increased by around 10% over the past decade. During the pandemic, a lot of parks endured record numbers of visitors due to health concerns and travel restrictions. "National parks have been incredibly successful recently," Cropper commented. "I believe we'll see the entrance levels keep increasing." in 2024 Once 2024 rolls around, visitors may need more than just a standard entrance pass to get into some parks. Many of these reservations will carry a $2 fee or higher, such as Yosemite National Park which recently announced a reservation requirement for weekends from April 13 to June 30 and August 17 to October 27, including holidays. All days throughout July 1 to August 16 will also require one.
